Feb 19, 2010
The Coos Curry Small Woodlands Association 2010 Dinner and Annual Meeting was held in February 2010 at the Red Lion in Coos Bay.
2010 Annual Meeting & Dinner During dinner, Marie Gale, President, presided over the 2010 Annual Meeting. Elections were held; Ryan Mahaffey and Kent Tresidder were re-elected and Cilde Grover was elected to fill the position being vacated by Greg Stone, who stepped down from the Board. The Special Scholarship Committee, extablished as a result of motions during the 2009 Annual Meeting, presented their report, which recommended guidelines for an annual scholarship, and proposed the establishment of a standing Scholarship Committee. The recommendations were approved with one small revision. Full minutes of the meeting will be posted as soon as they are approved by the Minutes Committee.
Gary Haga Following the Annual Meeting, the evening continued with a program with several speakers presenting information of interest to the attendees.
Gary Haga spoke on Economically Utilizing Biomass ("What to do with those slash piles?"). Gary has been agressively researching ways to utilize the massive amounts of slash (biomass) resulting from local logging operations. The possibilities include chipping slash and then drying and pressing the chips into "pucks" or "logs" which can be used in lieu of chopped firewood. The necessary machinery is expensive and getting it to logging landings is still problematic, but feasibility studies are underway locally and more research is being undertaken.
Kent Tresidder Kent Tresidder the 2009 Coos-Curry Tree Farmer of the Year, spoke about his experience being selected and going to Portland for the Oregon Tree Farmer of the Year awards.
Greg Stone and David Ford dissucessed the changes in the American Tree Farm Certification Program, which both had been involved with at the National committee level. While the new certification standards are not wholly different, they do have some basic philosophical changes. Greg Stone & David Ford The new requirements went into effect on January 1, 2010, and the goal is for all currently certified tree farmers re-certified with the new requirements by December 21, 2010. The AFF is offering a series of free webinars with information for landowners, volunteers and forestry consultants. For more information on the new Certification Standards and the Webinar Schedule, see American Forest Foundation's 2010-1015 Standards of Sustainability.
